In order to create such a space, we will require access to an adequate physical location of 100 to 200 square meters in a neighbourhood not too sensitive to quiet evening activity. An ideal location would have to be usable all year round and be fitted with adequate sanitary facilities (toilets and ideally a full bathroom suite) with the presence of a kitchen being a very welcome bonus. Such a space would be run by a non-profit organisation as an autonomous platform and be accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It would host several organisations and meetings, clubs, associations and projects. In order to appeal to the greatest possible number of contributors, a hackerspace should be centrally located, reasonably accessible by public transport, independent of other organisations and most importantly, open to the greater public. To this end, one of the first projects would consist of embellishing that location and establishing the necessary infrastructure. It must be noted, however, that the location should be usable without significant expenditure of time or money.

The community of hackerspaces, many of which just recently saw the light of this world, is a continuous source of inspiration and motivation guiding our efforts. Popular venues abroad include the ''Metalab'' in Vienna, the ''C-Base'' in Berlin, the ''Das-Labor'' in Bochum or the recently founded Hackerspaces ''Sublab'' in Leipzig and ''µc³'' in Munich. All of these attract a significant number of enthusiasts and have proven that the idea is a viable one.

[..Intro-Bla..] A "hackerspace" to us is a physical space for highly motivated and creative people to meet, socialize and drive innovation. Keeping in mind the competitive pressures of a globalised economy and the importance of technology in modern society, we sincerely believe that Luxembourg also needs such a place.

The advent and lasting success of open source principles has shown that great ideas and promising projects can be generated most efficiently where people from various backgrounds get and work together. People working with and on open source projects have a progressive, playful and constructive way of interacting with modern technology which they need to foster and cultivate. Information Technology (IT) offers a broad field of potential that lies idle without people perusing its possibilities in a creative, artistic and innovative manner.

We would like to create and run such a place in Luxembourg, where like-minded people could engage in projects, hold or participate in workshops, collaborate and give or listen to talks. We imagine that place to have a cosy atmosphere and be open to anybody, irrespective of gender, nationality, interests or age, as long as they're fascinated by experimenting and innovating in the fields of software, electronics, contemporary art, social interaction and communication or the sciences.

Visitors and regulars of such a space will be eager to learn, pass on their knowledge and drive technological as well as social innovation. The space should become a hub for people to meet, exchange ideas, build up a hacker-culture and make constructive use of their leisure time. Such use consisting of active participation in collaborative work, making up and working on novel projects in various fields of technology, art, and more specifically micro-electronics, bio-engineering, sensors, data protection, building robots and social software. As a result, the space could also become an outlet for the creative energy of pupils who find themselves unchallenged by traditional educational institutions, perhaps inspiring them to a career in technology.

A "hackerspace" would be a chance to fill a cultural void in Luxembourg and its neighboring regions and to foster the image of the Greater-Region as a technologically advanced and innovative environment. In this light, "hackerspaces" abroad that have been funded by their respective host-cities - and other sponsors - have often turned out to be a nurturing ground where young start-ups get their initial spark of inspiration and should therefore be considered as a prime target for investment. Technology leaders of today would have a chance to support tomorrow's technical creative elite and harness the potential and creativity that will flourish in such a space.

In order to create such a space, we will require access to an adequate physical location of 100 to 200 square meters in a neighbourhood not too sensitive to quiet evening activity.
