Ubuntu is probably the most well-known distribution of the community-built Linux Operating System (OS), a free and open alternative to Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS. On April 28th, 2011, Canonical Ltd., the company that markets Ubuntu will be releasing version 11.04 - codenamed "Natty Narwhal" of their OS. The hackerspace in Strassen, syn2cat a.s.b.l. organises a party on the evening of April 29th, in order to celebrate this release and profit from the occasion to organise a set of related talks and workshops. If you plan to attend, please do either drop us a line at info<at>hackerspace<dot>lu, rsvp at one of the [[#Syndication|social networking sites]], or add yourself to the attendee list on this page. == Call for Proposals == Is your association or company working with Unix tools or systems? Would you like to show up how Ubuntu or any other Unix-based OS let to your success? Let the Luxembourgish Ubuntu Community know! Email your suggestions for talks or workshops to info<at>hackerspace<dot>lu '''until April 22nd'''. == Photos == <gallery perrow="3"> File:URP11.04_kwisatz_1.jpg File:URP11.04_kwisatz_2.jpg File:URP11.04_kwisatz_3.jpg File:URP11.04_kwisatz_4.jpg File:URP11.04_kwisatz_5.jpg File:URP11.04_kwisatz_6.jpg File:URP11.04_kwisatz_7.jpg </gallery> == The evening's menu == === Presentations === * '''6.30 - 6.50pm, [[User:ldidelot|Loïc Didelot]]''' ([http://www.mixvoip.com MIXvoip] ): ''Ubuntu VS Debian, CentOS, Gentoo. Why MIXvoip chose Ubuntu'' : * '''7.00 - 7.20pm, [[User:Prometheus|Jan Guth]]''' ([http://www.syn2cat.lu syn2cat]): ''What the heck is GNU/Linux and what does Ubuntu stand for?'' : A short history lesson and an introduction to the world of free software, open knowledge and no borders for innovation and creativity. : Without loosing focus of the party's objective: Ubuntu. : * '''7.30 - 7.50pm, [[User:jedi|Marc Morocutti]]''' ([http://www.ion.lu ION Group]): ''[[Paravirtualise Ubuntu in XenServer]].'' : XenServer supports a lot of Linux and Windows operating systems out of the box, but Ubuntu isn’t one of them. This means that running Ubuntu is slower, because it uses HVM (hardware-assisted virtualisation) instead of PV (paravirtualization). This talk will show how to setup Ubuntu in PV mode. === Workshops === * '''8.00 - 8.30pm, [[User:Prometheus|Jan Guth]] & [[User:The_metalgamer|Dennis Fink]]''' ([http://www.syn2cat.lu syn2cat]): ''Ubuntu: One small click for a user, but a giant benefit for mankind'' : This will help you getting through the first minutes with Ubuntu. It is quite easy to install and get into it, but a little support isn't that bad, especially for the first time when trying to install besides Windows or MacOS. :If you want to encrypt your disk or have some other additional feature, don't be shy, just ask! : First we'll have a look over the requirements and accomplish these as good as possible, won't be that hard. Secondly, we'll go on with the installation process itself and accompany you while it. The last step will probably be the biggest one: looking into Ubuntu. How it works, what you can do with it, where are its strengths and where its foibles. * '''8.40 - 9.10pm, [[User:The_metalgamer|Dennis Fink]]''' ([http://www.syn2cat.lu syn2cat]): ''Introduction to the shell'' : What is a shell? What can it do for you? Why is it so powerful? : This will be as the title says, a little introduction into the bash shell. I will introduce the basic commands, and some cool features. This Talk will be held in german or luxemburgish. * '''9.20 - 10.00pm, [[User:The_metalgamer|Dennis Fink]] & [[User:Prometheus|Jan Guth]]''' ([http://www.c3l.lu C3L (Chaos Computer Club Letzebuerg)]): ''Easy & Secure Mail Transfer'' : In a world full of institutions and governments sniffing out the privacy of its users, is it most important to secure your mail transfair. Be it through, '''signing''' to guarantee the authenticity or through '''encryption''' of the entire content to prevent curious eyes from looking into it. Free Software makes it possible: GNUPG, Seahorse, Thunderbird and lots of other applications will help you to '''regain''' and '''ensure''' your privacy. === Chill-Out === While enjoying fresh drinks, a bite and the new system, it gives attendees the possibility to ask further questions. == Syndication== === Event pages on === [https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=183473251692444 Facebook] | [http://www.zap.lu/lu/i11585658/index.html?vc=11.5238731.1cff7d66535f7fd79190d5d320607cbe Zap.lu] | [http://www.itnation.eu/events/ubuntu-1104-release-party ITNation.eu] === GNU/Linux & Ubuntu Resources === * [http://www.ubuntu.com/ Official Ubuntu Website] * [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyReleaseSchedule Official Natty Release Schedule] * [http://www.ubuntu.com/community Official Ubuntu Community Support] ** [http://ubuntuforums.org/ Ubuntu Forums (English)] ** [http://ubuntuusers.de/ Ubuntu Community (German)] ** [http://ubuntu-fr.org/ Ubuntu Community (France)] ===Shell=== *http://www.commandlinefu.com *http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~hot/unix_linux_werkzeugkasten/bash.html *http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~hot/LT/2011/ *http://noone.org/talks/shell-efficiency/ *http://noone.org/talks/commandline-helpers/ *http://noone.org/talks/useful-tools/ *http://noone.org/talks/quoting/ == Involve non-linux users == As Ubuntu is probably the most popular GNU/Linux version for beginners and switchers it would be a great contribution to the free software & culture world, if we could get new people involved with Linux. So what is left to do? As already mentioned, providing folks with enough Ubuntu CDs as well as a information sheet with helpful information about the beginning or switching to GNU/Linux. A few boxes with prepared operating systems would be recommendable as well. A small presentation about GNU/Linux, the philosophy and the main features of Ubuntu. Don't forget the kids - there are very good educational an games applications for the youngsters. At the end we can call it an evening. == Invitation letter == '''Don't hesitate to do your own presentation or workshop, even though already listed. Don't forget that joining an activity to contribute is also welcomed. :)''' <pre> Ladies and Gentlemen, dear <nowiki>syn2cat</nowiki> Members, Linux-Lovers and other Hackers, On April 29th we will celebrate the release of Ubuntu 11.04 at the <nowiki>syn2cat</nowiki> Hackerspace in Strassen [0]. As last year, we shall adjust to the times and have an early barbecue if the weather permits. (Maybe some different food if it doesn't.) There will also be alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at very affordable prices. Different from last year, we're looking into having some programme along the party such as talks, workshops and potentially some entertainment for the young and older hackers. This is why I'd like to profit from this opportunity to join a Call for Proposals to this invitation. If your association or company is working with Unix tools or systems, I'd kindly ask you to email your suggestions for talks or workshops either to me or to info@hackerspace.lu More, and semi-regularly updated, info will be at your disposal on our wiki [1]. Looking forward to seeing you in April! David [0] https://www.hackerspace.lu/wiki/Location [1] https://www.hackerspace.lu/wiki/Ubuntu_11.04_Release_Party </pre> [[Category:Photos]]
