I honestly think we shouldn't "waste" Energy on file storage and the like with old Hardware.

: Well, it does seem that these "ready-made" solutions don't quite work. Why, for instance, is a DAAP broken on the Zyxel suddenly? Too many songs?! Hell knows... It's actually a pretty good idea to buy some large drives, a good 80+ (efficient) power-supply and to find a sufficiently fast motherboard / cpu combo to make the fileserver work how we want.
