This project is currently on hold as today "naas" has gone online. A commercial nas box which was sitting useless on a table. I got it to work and it now has the latest firmware. It's a Zyxel NSA-220. 300GB raid1
Build up a NAS server (e.g. by using http://www.freenas.org/) which is located at the syn2cat hackerspace. It is open to anyone for storing data.
Possible usage:
- bring your laptop dans sync it to your private storage with timemachine, rsync ...
- store huge chunks of data you would like to be available at the hackerspace, to one person or to anyone visiting
- anything else you can do with a disk array
Implementation
- 386 based PC
- many connectors for disks
- lotsa disks or some huge disks
- freenas software
- manuals how to use sync software and keep your data encryptd on the NAS
- implement quota?
- a nice case with lotsa funky leds doing useless blinkenlights
