The perfect place
A HackerSpace should be spacious with preferably a few smaller rooms to have different projects in. The Kitchen is nearly a must (see Social Cooking) but it should be a bit shielded from any other rooms to avoid any smells. A Bathroom is an interesting feat. The Living Room Spacious enough to have a couch and big table A good public transport link is a must too
The perfect place would have:
- A low rent
- Heating
- Natural light / windows to open
- Kitchen
- Toilet(s)
- Shower
- Parking or at least the possibility to access it with a truck to (un)load stuff
- A bus stop or railway station not too far away and available till late
- Separate entry (not shared with the rest of the tenants) so that we can install our own access system
- No (or deaf) neighbors
- Easy to reach
- Some storage rooms (basement/cellar) for server
- Broadband Internet access
- Possibility to install machinery / tools for making things à la Bre
- Exhibition area
- Conference/presentation area
- Small room without windows/light (for photography stuff)
- Access to Food (either Restaurants or Markets)
Loft: 20, rue du Fort Wallis, Luxembourg
I checked out the loft and it looks nice. Plenty of space incl. toilet and shower, a small storage and a kitchen. Floor is Laminat. Real estate agent said that we might have some extra walls. I personally wouldn't recommend that as the open solution gives us the maximum flexibility. Neighbors are studios with young people, so we may listen to music and there is a café downstairs. It is very central (10 minutes walk from the railway station). You shouldn't come by car... parking is not so easy and the police is next door :-)

Apartment: (near) 172, rte d'Arlon, Strassen
I checked out this place and it definitely looks very interesting. The owner is a very nice reasonable person. It is located on the other side of the road, in front of Mc Donald's in Strassen.
It's an apartment building with an apartment which was used by a travel agency on the ground floor (large front window), and has two levels above that one with private apartments.
There is plenty of parking belonging to the building, hence private, and others in the surroundings.
The rooms are generally well lit by sunlight. The building was constructed in the 70s, and is in good shape. There is no garage, but there is a large cellar split up into different rooms which may be locked by key. There are quite large rooms in the cellar giving huge storage space.
There is even a massive safe (there was a bank in there once...) :-) but no clue if one may use it :-).
Nice thing is that there is even a garden for shared use and at the back of the building it's quite and really nice... big plus !
The apartment consists of one large bedroom, one smaller one, a fairly large bathroom, a large living room spanning the whole side of the building, and a kitchen with kitchen stuff (fridge, oven etc) included !
To enter the building, there are two doors closed by keys. Then a stairway leading to the two floors, and a stairway, separated with a door, leading to the cellar.
The building is completely empty. Hence the owner isn't 100% sure if he wants to let one apartment or let the building to some agency or so (but I have a feeling he may be convinced to let just one)...
On a side note, I only visited the first floor apartment, but the top floor one is empty as well as noted...only thing is the people who lived there are currently moving out...but it's exactly the same as the one I checked out.
Here are some pictures of the first floor apartment.
Accessibility
There are two main buses going to Strassen from Luxembourg: 18, 222. The first one is a local bus, the other one comes from Kirchberg, through Strassen, to Steinfort. There is also a fairly close train-station in Bertrange. Parking as already mentioned is no problem at all ! Motorway access is "around the corner". So I suppose everybody would be happy with accessibility to this place.
There are several fast food restaurants nearby (Quick, Mc Donald's, PizzaHut), but also some real restaurants (Italian, Indian, Chines (I think), etc..), Cactus (supermarket/mall) is very close, as is Cora/Concorde. Banks, Post office, Bakery, Drug Store, etc...
You get the picture.
