Minutes
Stroossefestival
- 22nd of September
- Activity-sheet not yet delivered. (ACT)
- cf. mail about Stroossefestival.
- We had some brainstorming on the mailing list.. some ideas came up
- What we sell is our money (WWSIOM)
- But we have to put up everything ourselves... tent, food, etc...
- Drinks are easy...
- As food it was suggested to sell popcorn... (has to be decided until Monday!)
- We should try to avoid long queues.
- Popcorn could be done in advance.
- with a popcorn machine?
- in a huge pot with oil (which is more dangerous)
- with our own home-made popcorn machine
- Another suggestion would be pancakes
- Salad could also be made
- Gromperekichelcher (needs frying machine or a heating plate and pots..)
- Which brings us to the question (related to GRL activities): Should we buy a smaller tent (3x6m) i.e. [5], [6] (ACT)
Various GRL activities
- Got asked for 3 different GRL-Luxembourg activities
- One in Lorentzweiler
- Two in Trier, DE (June 30th and July 14th)
- Another one in Germany is upcoming
- Everyone invited to come and watch and help. (mail grl_AT_hackerspace_DOT_lu if you want to help).
- Came up with several ideas about using smartphones for GRL activities (to be further discussed) (ACT)
Do-ocracy
- Decisions are taken by those who do things.
- If you want something to get done, you just f*cking do it!
- There are suggestions made like "We should do this and that."
- If you're suggesting an idea, you're automatically volunteering to do it.
- Can we formalize that as the way how stuff is done in the hackerspace?
- We mostly run like that already, cf. the syn2wall, the computer-museum shelve.
- How can we people from doing crap?
- There should always be the possibility to veto things.
- The "be excellent to each other" part is very important!
- When in doubt, ask first.
- Let people know about what you've done. Tell people, communicate your changes!
- If something changed in a way you like, please say so.
- We will put this into the Guidelines or User Manual (ACT)
Shapeoko
- Kris presents the shapeoko
- Small CNC router based on MakerSlide
- It's a mechanical kit for assembly
- Works with aluminium profiles
- Arduino-based, uses NEMA17 sized stepper motors
- Can be extended, i.e. it scales, but the longer the slides, the less precise it will be
- You can do a pick-and-place machine with the kit.
- It's Dremel-compatible
- There IS interest
- Nobody should have to pay more than 100 EUR
- All in all, about 425-525 EUR (probably the higher number)
- Do-ocracy style: Kris already ordered it the kit.
- We should combine private financing and a part paid by syn2cat.
- A call for contributions will be made.
(ACT) - Contributions to be paid to the syn2cat account with a special mention.
- cf. London Hackspace pledge system (We might use the same principle)
- A call for contributions will be made.
- Some videos were shown
3D Printers
- The makerbot has many issues (not precise, head crashes into the object quite often)
- Would like to keep the cupcake makerbot and get another 3D printer: The Ultimaker
- Also a kit for assembly
- Cost is about 1.200 EUR
- Twice the size of the Makerbot
- Pledge should also be run for this project. (ACT)
- With an Ultimaker, we could even build other machines (since it is quite precise) - "Print your own printer"
New member initiative
- Brainstorming using Post-Up methodology was used.
- The brainstorming was split into three questions: (Whom?, Where?, How?)
- Whom? (normalized, sorted and grouped)
- < 18
- students at the schools where you learn some practical skills
- > 16 - We can't be choosy
- > 18
- People over 18?! Perhaps also people below 16 under special conditions
- Tech-Students 18+
- University students with ideas we could support
- 18 - infinity
- > 20
- Geeks 18 - 30
- > 25
- 27+ spouses, girl- and boyfriends
- People that work for the EU (they have plenty of time)
- Singles 35+
- Teachers
- Other
- Diversify from our current crowd, the IT geeks niche: more women, pensioners, people who aren't Luxembourgers; haven't been to a lycée technique
- < 18
- Where? (normalized, sorted and grouped)
- middle-grade
- in schools
- in high-schools/lycées (3x)
- LTAM (12th grade and up)
- university
- uni.lu (3x)
- surrounding universities
- other
- at tech-museums
- at tech-companies (e.g. HP, Cisco, IBM, EBRC)
- nearly everywhere (the internet counts)
- in the press, online, on hack-a-day
- in hardware stores
- in promoculture
- locally
- people who live near the hackerspace
- middle-grade
- How? (normalized, sorted and grouped)
- Activities/Projects
- with workshops
- by having more active projects (everyone should be involved in a project)
- with own activities (e.g. haxogreen or hackolympics) or activities like the Xmas-Market
- with Open Doors (e.g. Saturdays from 4-11pm)
- with more diverse activities like crafting or cooking.
- Tools
- with robots
- with the help of our 3D printer
- with hardware-hacking
- by showing off projects (e.g. the marble adder)
- PR
- by writing cool articles for our press partners
- anything that gets us press coverage or is seen online.
- Use Google adwords? SEO?
- with PR (videos, blog, Newspaper, TV, Radio)
- by going straight into schools (speak in class)
- Activities/Projects
- Whom? (normalized, sorted and grouped)
Let's put do-ocracy into action: put your suggestion into practice.
(ACT)
Especially the PR activities can be easily done since we have all the infrastructure in place.
Tell PubRel and Office circles how they can be of help, apply for access to our blog or Twitter.
- Other things to do include:
- Talk to people and invite them over (your dentist for instance ;))
Camp
- Please advertise the camp as much as possible using flyers, posters and every means possible.
- All members are expected to help out on the camp
- Yes, there will be a thank-you meal after tear-down.
- The reward for helping out is that we're able to have the camp!
Topic by Patrick Peiffer
- Maybe it will be a simple discussion about all of the topics.
- We'll do a vote to determine preferences (ACT)
Name search
- Please review the minutes over here in redmine.
- Add place and geeky terms as you wish to http://typewithme/p/namesearch
- Assemble and vote for your preferred names (before July 30th)
office activities
What has office done since april 27
- presentation gps / navigation / geocaching for seniors planned
- New memberscards were printed. If you haven't received yours yet, come to the space and talk to an office member.
- We decided to convert our savings account into an etika (ethical saving, credits for ecological and social projects only) account.
- We still need to actually go to the bank and do the conversion though. (ACT)
- Our housenumber is gone: there was a mixup issue with another building.
- Guillaume joined the office circle.
- member list +- shall we make that public?
- => sign up sheet: howyou wanna be introduced? self or by office?
- no announce if people leave
- We had a cc by-nc-sa vs by-sa discussion about content on our wiki
- We had a discussion about policing mailing lists:
- When should people post where?
- Under what circumstances can people be banned from a list?
- We got commercial ssl certs thanks to Stereo which do now satisfy all browser requirments (i.e. no more warnings)
- We acquired more iButtons with new holders
- We had someone over discuss with us the idea of founding a fab lab in Luxembourg. These were non-conclusive though.
- We went to some CSAL and youth commission meetings. Minutes have been posted where possible.
- for big orders outside EU: beware of customs
- A list of activities in 2011 has been compiled for subsides
- A letter for 2 more rooms was sent to the mayor.
- a lot of bikeshed we spared from the discuss list
Misc
- Have a live-tweet wall on hackerspace.lu for people to show what they did at syn2cat. (done)
- A pledges page was set up.
